A note from our Pastor:

”O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

1 Timothy 6:20

Good Morning Dearly Beloved,

Our study verse this morning begins the Apostle Paul’s closing salutation to this letter. The letter has covered many subjects and left Timothy with great concepts to meditate upon. The Apostle would write other letters to Timothy, including one that is preserved in our bibles. The ability to write those letters, though, was unknown as he concluded this one.

The Apostle’s love and concern for Timothy are captured in the two simple words to start the verse. Timothy was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ. He had been a traveling partner and fellow preacher. Now he was overseeing a flock the Apostle cared for tremendously. He held a very special place for the Apostle.

The gospel of Jesus Christ had been committed to Timothy’s trust. First, it was committed to him by his mother and grandmother. They taught him the scriptures at a young age. Then it was committed to him by the Apostle as he became a minister himself. Lastly, it was committed to him by the congregations he served. In each instance, they looked to Timothy to maintain the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The gospel of Jesus Christ was not for Timothy alone. Rather, it was committed to him that he might share it with others. That he might be a light for others to see by and to learn of their salvation. This same trust is true for all disciples, and especially for those with a calling to the ministry. When one has learned the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ they are to hold that treasure dearly.

In the last two phrases of this verse, the Apostle circles back to things that were endangering the keeping of the truth of Jesus Christ. False teachers were bringing in ideas contrary to the gospel of Christ. Vain ideas were being spread for the purpose of man’s glory. They were supporting their ideas with their own reasoning and philosophy. To hold to the truth of Jesus Christ it was necessary to not be swept up by these ideas.

Our Prayers are with you daily,

Brother Jeremiah
