A note from the Pastor’s desk:
“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;”
Colossians 3:9
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
Colossians 3:9 continues the Apostle Paul’s shift from theological concepts to practical application. In our study verse, he continues to emphasize particular behaviors that implement the theological lessons he has been teaching. In this instance, the Apostle’s focus is singular and brings with it a clear instruction.
The foundation for practical instruction is a reminder of the disciple’s state. Putting off the old man is a theological concept for the Apostle. It relies on the image of taking off old, soiled clothes and replacing them with new garments. This concept reflects the state of the child of God after regeneration. It is not behavioral; rather, it drives behavior that pleases God.
The Apostle focuses on one particular behavior in this instruction. In the far east, many held a belief that a lie, well delivered, was a skill to hone. A person who could skillfully tell a lie without getting caught was considered highly intelligent. The Apostle’s intention with this instruction was to reverse the accepted practice. He wanted the disciples to understand that lying to one another created barriers within the community of believers.
The Apostle, when highlighting sins, often focused heavily on those that impacted the group. He previously addressed anger, wrath, and malice. Now he focuses on the lies that were all too common. This emphasis begins with the second element of the Great Commandment: to love your neighbor. Sins that harm other people or the community at large fundamentally violate that commandment from Jesus. The Apostle also emphasized the importance of a community to support each disciple. Life brings challenges, and the disciple needs a strong network to help them manage those difficulties. A truly supportive network or community cannot be built on deceit, anger, and jealousy.
The instruction contained in this verse is timeless. The cultural views might have changed, but the need to be honest with fellow believers remains. We all need that community to support us through difficult times. Let us focus on creating bonds that reach deep and hold strong.
Our Prayers are with you daily
Brother Jeremiah
