With this article I will begin to examine the Articles of Faith of the Primitive Baptist Church. The wording and verses that I will use in this series are from the Articles of Faith of the Amarillo Primitive Baptist Church of which I am the pastor. However, most Primitive Baptist churches have similarly worded Articles of Faith that use many of the same verses. It is my hope with these articles that your knowledge of what Primitive Baptist believe will become greater and more in-depth.
“We believe in only one true and living God, and the trinity of persons in the God-head – Father, Son, and Holy Ghost and yet not three, but one God. –Deut. 6:4, Mal. 2:10, I Cor. 8:6, I John 5:7”
The Foundation of All Belief
The belief that there is only one true and living God is the foundation of all belief. If one cannot accept that there is only one God and not a deity of multiple persons then belief in the rest of the truth of the scriptures is not going to be likely nor appropriate. This is the most basic of beliefs for the Christian and must be believed without the smallest of doubt in order to be a proper member of the church.
The Mystery of God to Our Minds
1 John 5:7
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
There are some things that appear in scripture that we are to believe by faith, and yet know full well that the mind cannot fully comprehend. This truth happens to be one of them. The scriptures teach that there is only one God, and yet there are three parts to that one. These three parts have no separation in agreement or purpose, and yet each fulfill a different role in the life of the believer. For instance let us examine eternal salvation. God the father chose a people before the foundation of the world, God the Son redeemed the same chosen people through His death on the cross, and the Holy Spirit informs those same people of their salvation in time. Each of these are in complete agreement regarding our salvation, and yet each fulfills a different role in our receiving of eternal life.
Our Creator and Our Keeper
“Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?”
1 Corinthians 8:6
“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”
In all senses of the word we are the creations of God. In a natural sense we were created by God as he created Adam in the beginning of time and gave unto Adam and Eve the ability to procreate and repopulate the earth. We are created by the power of God and each birth is a miracle of God as he allows us to continue to dwell upon this earth. In a spiritual sense we are a creation of God for we have the ability for eternal life because of the work of Christ Jesus and have spiritual life because of regeneration performed by the Holy Spirit. It is by this same power that we are kept from day-to-day. By the power of the one and true living God we are formed and kept in this life and taken home when we draw our last breath.
May we be ever faithful to serve the one and true living God!
May the Lord Bless you this week!
