A note from our Pastor:
“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;”
Colossians 1:5
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
The writings of the Apostle Paul move seamlessly between teachings on practical living and theology. This flow is due to the Apostle teaching that the two ideas must be interwoven. The disciples‘ daily life should reflect the truth of the gospel. Our study verse this week is an example of this truth.
In the prior verses, the Apostle has written of his thankfulness for the faith and love of the saints at Colossae. Those are practical, visible, elements of being a disciple. Now he blends those tangible behaviors with a spiritual, invisible characteristic. The hope, which is held in the hearts of believers, is of great importance. The Apostle would write in Hebrews 11:1, that faith is the substance of things hoped for and that same truth is expressed here.
Ultimately, the hope disciples have is for two things. First, it is for the providence of a God who loves them. Sometimes hope is only thought of as being about eternal items. But in reality, the disciple should think about hope as a daily accompaniment to the difficulties of life. Second, the saints hope for and look to the glory of heaven after this life is completed. Both forms of that hope are rooted, anchored, in heaven in the Trinity.
While hope is ultimately a heavenly item, it is revealed to those on the earth through the gospel. The gospel tells the truth of the redemption of the elect of God. It tells the love of God for his people. It tells of the willingness of Jesus Christ to provide for his people in love. In doing so, it reveals a truth that allows for faith which is the substance of those things hoped for. This was the message of the Apostle to those believers at Colossae.
As disciples, let us be encouraged today to walk in hope, because of faith in Jesus Christ.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
AMEN!
