In this sermon Elder J.W. Cunningham continues the study of the book of James focusing on verses 2 and 3 of the first chapter. James here instructs the believer to find the joy at the end of temptations. This can only be accomplished by choosing to trust in God in the face of difficulties rather than in ourselves.

Diverse Temptations – The Book of James – Sermon Notes
Text: “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” (James 1:2-3)
Temptation never means affliction simply, but in every case conveys the idea of a moral trial, or a test of character. ~ J. Addison Alexander, D.D.
Key Point – When James was writing to those scattered abroad after the death of Stephen in the great persecution the temptations they were facing were persecution meant to drive them away from their faith. Likewise, today the temptation we face from Satan and other adversaries are meant to push us away from our faith and from trusting in The Lord and God the Father.

Two Possible Outcomes from a Temptation
-
Follow our Flesh and Deny Christ
-

-
Peter becomes aware of his denial – Mark 14:66-72

The way we progress
-
If we follow our flesh we lose hope and become impatient
-
If we follow after God we gain patience
-
1 Peter 1:6-7
-
Romans 5:3-4
-
Hebrews 12:1

-
What do we learn?
-
Temptations themselves do not bring positive things into our lives
-
Temptations force us to decide if we are going to seek God or run after our own answers
-
When we choose to follow after God we develop patience and understanding that our faith is founded in something sure and as a result we can rejoice in that assurance.
