A note from our Pastor’s desk:
“Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.”
Colossians 2:23
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
Our study verse for this week, Colossians 2:23, concludes the Apostle Paul’s addressing of the false teachings in Colossae. Chapter three begins with the Apostle teaching on the appropriate actions for believers. Thus, it is important to see this verse as a closing argument against the false teachings.
The phrase “a shew of wisdom” is the foundation of this argument. The Apostle acknowledged that following these false teachings gave individuals an outward appearance of being a religious elite. The harsh nature of the requirements made them appear to be devout and dedicated to God. However, this is a performative religion instead of a deep spirituality. A strict life can be in accordance with faith, but the believer must be careful that their walk is about loving God and one another not simply following rules and limitations.
Next, the Apostle identifies three categories of false teachings. The first is will worship, which in simple terms, means following man-made rules for Godly living. The false rules have changed over time but normally are based on the prohibition of certain foods, drinks, or activities. The second is voluntary or artificial humility. This is the excessive debasement of oneself to appear more holy. The final false teaching is neglecting the body or asceticism. False teachers in Colossae taught that if you punished the body you could purify the spirit.
In the final portion of this verse, the Apostle points out the paradox of these rules. The Apostle often uses the term, “satisfying of the flesh,” to mean the natural desires of a person. The three false teachings identified above all appear to suppress “the flesh.” In reality, however, they provide the follower with the opportunity to feel self-satisfied with their obedience. Harsh physical rules and restraints do nothing to change the heart of the individual. It only creates an outward appearance of devotion while love, empathy, and grace are missing from their lives.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
