A note from the desk of our Pastor:
”For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
Colossians 2:9
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and it is preserved for the saints because it is beneficial for discipleship. Some scriptures, when read, are immediately and universally understood by believers. Other verses, such as our study verse this week, are rooted in the Apostle Paul addressing a false teaching threatening early New Testament churches. Even then, the fundamental truth underlying the verse is beneficial for all believers.
The fundamental truth underlying this verse was one heavily on the mind of the Apostle. He had previously addressed this topic in Colossians 1:19 saying, “For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.” Both verses emphasize that the “fullness of God” was in Jesus Christ. Therefore, a core aspect of interpreting this verse is an understanding of this phrase.
In Gnostic, a false teaching in the days of the Apostle, the word “fullness” implied the infinite nature of the supreme deity. In other words, the lack of limits in any form on God’s power, knowledge, and other characteristics. In these statements, the Apostle is adopting the Gnosticism term “fullness”, applying it to the Godhead, and then emphasizing that it applies to Jesus Christ, not limited by his incarnation.
As we examine our study verse, the Apostle was teaching that the divine power in Jesus was his very nature. It was not an emanation from God. In other words, it was not that God the Father bestowed the divine power on Jesus Christ during his incarnation. Rather, the divine nature of Christ had always been present and did not pause or cease during his earthly incarnation. This concept gets into deep theological waters that many get confused in, but the important thing to remember is that Jesus was and always will be 100% God.
This truth is important as the saints consider the earthly life and death of Jesus Christ. His path was always a straight line to the cross, and it was always in perfect accordance with the will of God the Father. That alignment was possible because of the divine nature of Jesus while he was also completely human. The combined nature of Jesus Christ was the only way the necessary steps could be completed for eternal salvation to be secured for the elect children of God.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
