A note from our Pastor:
“Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:”
Colossians 1:28
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
The prior verse ends with a reference to Christ in each child of God. The opening statement of this verse, “whom we preach,” refers back to Christ. In our study verse this week, the Apostle Paul expresses why he preaches adamantly to all those under his charge.
The preaching of the Apostle first served as a warning to those who heard it. The warning was not for the purpose of making disciples walk in a way to secure their eternal salvation. Rather, these warnings aimed to protect their peace and hope. The Apostle had a great fear that those he was ministering to would be lured into believing false doctrines. Those false doctrines would take them away from the security they had in the truth of Christ.
There is a great difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is the act of gaining information. Knowledge can come through a variety of modalities. But wisdom is the proper application of that knowledge. The Apostle desired to teach in such a way that the disciples would gain not just knowledge but application of that knowledge. This went along with the warnings to avoid false doctrines but also on the positive side of promoting discipleship and love.
While the Apostle actively warned against false teachings, he likewise, encouraged believers to fully apply the truth of Christ to their lives. He wanted believers to experience the fullness of the hope and joy that was possible in being a disciple. He knew very well the trials and tribulations of life, and, as a result, understood the need for comfort and peace.
Finally, the Apostle says his preaching was for the purpose of presenting a complete disciple. The word perfect in this verse is not to be interpreted as sinless. The Apostle himself said he was the chief among sinners. But the desire was for the children of God, under his ministry, to have a complete understanding of the truth of Jesus Christ and how it applied to their lives. This ultimately is the aim of the gospel and the gospel ministry. It aims for the believer to know the truth about eternal salvation, the hope of it, and then apply the teachings of Christ to their daily walk.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
