“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

Colossians 1:13

Good Morning Dearly Beloved,

In the prior verse, the Apostle Paul presents the concept of the saints having a spiritual inheritance of light. If you have not read last week’s study, I encourage you to go back and read it before you read this week’s thoughts. The two are connected in such a way that you need the entirety of the context.

The Apostle now tells the saints that not only did God make his children able to inherit a kingdom of light, but he rescued them from the power of darkness. The power of darkness in this verse can largely be understood as a reference to Satan. But it is also a reference to being dead in trespasses and sins (theologically referred to as total depravity). The eternal consequence of this darkness was to be condemned to hell.

From a natural perspective, being under the control of Satan and being condemned to eternity in hell is all of humankind’s inherent state. Left without the intervention of God it describes every person’s condition. Thus, the need to be delivered. In the second half of the verse, the Apostle describes how the deliverance took place.

The word translated means to be changed in form. If you translate a text from Spanish to English, the text is still the same, but the form of it changes. In this case, the translation does not mean a new person is created. The person remains the same, but the form of the person changes from being ruled by Satan to being a servant of God.

Finally, the translation for the child of God is from the kingdom of darkness. A place ruled by Satan and dominated by depravity. To the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. A place marked by light, hope, and peace.
