A note from our Pastor:
”Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,”
Colossians 1:4
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
Every writer has characteristics inherent in his or her writing. These characteristics are what we call style or voice. One of the traits in the writing of the Apostle Paul is extended sentences. Often, the same sentence carries over multiple verses. In those instances, it is necessary to put verses together to determine the full meaning. The beginning of Colossians is a prime example of this writing style.
The Apostle began a thought in the prior verses saying “we give thanks to God…for you.” In our study verse this week, the thought is continued. The Apostle (writing with Timothy) explains what they have heard about the congregation at Colossae that makes them thankful.
The first thing they identify is hearing about the faith in Christ Jesus of these believers. Keep in mind, that the Apostle likely had never visited Colossae. He was hearing about their behavior and attitudes from other ministers. The first commandment of Jesus Christ is to love God with all your heart. The Apostle is expressing thanksgiving that these disciples are living that faith. They are following the teachings of Jesus Christ and being steadfast in their walk. This is the first and foremost behavior we should all look for in other disciples.
The second thing the Apostle and Timothy have heard about is the of the saints at Colossae for one another. This is the second commandment of Christ, to love your neighbor. The Apostle is receiving reports of this group not only attempting to live in an upright manner but doing so in great love for one another. No doubt he heard tremendous reports of their charity and kindness for others.
Disciples should take note of this report. It is the nature of a good report that any congregation should seek to have. The report was not about how large the group was, how superior they were, or how great the people were. Rather, the report the Apostle rejoiced in was that they clearly loved God and loved one another. What a blessing to have this reputation for a group of believers.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
