A note from our Pastor:
”But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”
1 Timothy 6:9
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
The Apostle Paul stated in verse eight of this chapter that if the disciple has food, clothing, and shelter they should be content. Our study verse this week follows up on that thought. In writing this verse and verse ten, the Apostle clarifies his point and makes clear his concern.
A key phrase in our study verse is “they that will be rich” as it clarifies the rest of the teaching. The Apostle was writing about those individuals who focus their efforts in life on becoming rich. Some of them might succeed and others will fail miserably. Either way, their day-to-day actions are driven by seeking to increase their material goods.
Having this understanding is important. The Apostle Paul was not seeking to drive the church into a strict asceticism through this teaching. Rather, the point is to be content with the state you are in as a disciple. The purpose being to focus on serving God not on gaining material wealth.
The warning of the verse is to those who are constantly seeking wealth. When the riches of the world become the primary motivation the disciple will often fall into the temptations of the devil and the hurtful lusts of this world. He or she may still engage in some activities that seem to seek after God. However, their actions will reveal a different desire.
The drowning in perdition and destruction is something that happens in this life, not a reference to eternal destiny. Those who are focused on growing their riches are willing to defraud their neighbor, oppress the poor, engage in lying, and function using violence and rage. These actions cause not only themselves but those around them to experience destruction. In due time, inevitably, one engaged in these behaviors will not be focused on God.
As disciples, the focus should not be on the amount of material goods but on being content with the blessings of God.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
