A note from our Pastor:

”For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 3:13

Good Morning Dearly Beloved,

In our study verse this morning the Apostle brings his remarks regarding the office of deacon (really both the office of pastor and deacon) to a close. This verse and those preceding it were guidelines to the community of believers in appointing men to fulfill the two roles. None in that day nor since then has perfectly fulfilled all of the characteristics. Thus, rather than strict requirements they are directional aspirations.

In this concluding verse, the Apostle indirectly addresses a truth regarding the community of believers which we often don’t discuss. In secular jobs it is acknowledged performance levels vary. You have outstanding employees who lead the way and you have employees whose performance is at best following and supportive. These variations are natural and expected in the work place. We encourage all to improve, we support all employees, but we recognize skill sets and understanding vary.

The Apostle in this verse is recognizing the same is true for those who are in the office of deacon. Some will choose to dedicate themselves to the work and perform at a high level and others will choose a different path. The direct point of the Apostle is the reward for those who dedicate themselves to the work of a deacon is excellent.

The first reward is a “good degree” which is a vague term and has been much debated. Some have held a deacon who performed the role well would move into being a minister. This hierarchical view is not supported in scripture and, unfortunately, is a ruinous practice which many congregations have embraced over the years. Others have proposed the Apostle was referring to a Jewish idea of “degrees of faith” and arguing a deacon has a different place in heaven after this life than other members of the elect. To be blunt, this is a terrible misinterpretation of scripture and puts out ideas which divide the congregation.

Rather, the message of the Apostle in this verse is still focused on love, grace, and mercy. When the deacon fulfills the duties of the office in a highly effective manner they directly see the beauty of a life filled with love, grace, and mercy. The deacon is a first hand witness to the need for empathy and the impact of grace. With this understanding the faith in Christ grows and the joy of life is enhanced. This is the reward of the deacon who fulfills the office well.

Our Prayers are with you daily,

Brother Jeremiah
