A note from our Pastor:

”Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”

1 Timothy 3:12

Good Morning Dearly Beloved,

In our study verse this week the Apostle returns to instructions for the community of believers in choosing ones to be deacons. The standard provided is very similar to the characteristic the Apostle previously provided for ministers. Thus, it is important to consider the meaning in connection with the role being fulfilled.

The role of the deacon in the community of believers is to care for the physical property, to manage the finances, and to care for those in need. In other words, the role of the deacon is to handle the administrative aspects of the congregation so ministers can focus on study and sharing the word of God.

In order for the deacon to successfully fulfill the duties of the position he must exhibit wisdom, planning, dedication, and importantly empathy and compassion. It is these characteristics which the congregation should look for in how the potential deacon functions in his home.

The congregation should carefully avoid the concept of ruling his own house well meaning the man is austere and authoritarian. First, this does not create a healthy home for his wife and children. The family needs a father who is understanding and empathetic while leading with wisdom and planning. To add to this, if the deacon brings an austere and authoritarian spirit to the congregation any sense of mercy and grace will be quickly lost. The deacon is not present to rule over the congregation, but to help guide them with compassion and wisdom.

Finally, the congregation should seek a man to be deacon who is willing to serve others. The role of deacon is not one of authority, but rather dedication to service. If the man appointed to be a deacon by the congregation is unwilling to remain dedicated to the congregation despite lack of compensation or appreciation he is unlikely to be successful in the role.

Our Prayers are with you daily,

Brother Jeremiah
