A note from our Pastor:

”And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.”

1 Timothy 3:10

Good Morning Dearly Beloved,

In our study verse this week, the Apostle continues discussion regarding the office of deacon but shifts to the process by which one should be appointed to such office. These are important instructions for the community of believers as the deacons handle the administrative duties such as the finances, care of the building, and the care of widows and less fortunate.

First, the office of deacon is not an honorary role or one earned based on age or time within the community of believers. It is a functional role with important responsibilities. Thus, the candidate for the office of deacon must be capable of performing those roles. Equally important, the congregation should only have as many deacons as necessary to perform the work of the office.

Second, the deacon should demonstrate an ability to fulfill the work of the office before being appointed to the office by the congregation. This does not mean some formal trial, but rather, the individual should desire to care for the congregation in such a way as to do some of the work before being in the office. For example, the individual might care for the building or grounds, might assist the elderly, or handle the technology of streaming the service before being made a deacon by the congregation. This might also mean an individual fulfills these roles for a significant amount of time before the congregation has the need to add an additional deacon.

Finally, the individual who desires to become a deacon must be found blameless. The Apostle’s statement here is not the same as other qualifications. The reference in this verse is to the demonstration of abilities. The individual who desires to be a deacon shouldn’t be found to behave inappropriately with any responsibilities taken on for the congregation. Also, the individual should not become haughty about their role or express indignation when not immediately appointed to the role of deacon.

The role of deacon within the community of believers is important and the congregation should handle it with care.

Our Prayers are with you daily,

Brother Jeremiah
