A note from our Pastor:
“But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”
1 Timothy 2:10
Good Morning Dearly Beloved,
In our study verse this week, the Apostle Paul continues with instructions to Timothy for how women should dress for public worship. In the prior verse, the Apostle instructs women to avoid dressing to show off their wealth. Now, in our study verse the Apostle continues his thought about what modest dress consists of for a women (in truth for a man as well).
First, these instructions are for women who are actively professing their belief in Jesus Christ and are engaged in public worship with the community of believers. This is the Apostle’s audience and who these instructions are intended for both when he wrote to Timothy and today.
The ultimate message from the Apostle is to ensure the way you dress does not become such the center of attention that those around you fail to see the work you are doing. Furthermore, if one’s focus on Sunday morning is in presenting themselves to show off their natural wealth this is immediately contradictory to a humbleness of spirit and mind. Finally, when one shows up dressed in this manner (or shows up driving the most expensive car) it immediately makes those around them feel as though empathy is impossible.
The good works or fruit of the Spirit do not make a child of God. We do not perform them in order to gain salvation. Rather, the fruit of the Spirit and good works are more like clothing. They are items we put on and choose to go out in public in. We choose to put on love, or forgiveness, or long suffering and we choose to wear it each day. The message of the Apostle was — you can choose to put on items that show off your natural wealth or you can choose to put on items which demonstrate your spiritual wealth.
Our Prayers are with you daily,
Brother Jeremiah
